Non-Profit

Literary Legacies

Literary Legacies is a 501(c)3 non-profit that teaches youth, grades 3-12, how to write their own fiction or nonfiction book. We tap into the naturally creative abilities of children to bring out the best of their imaginations. We do this for our students to find healing, purpose, agency, and confidence that they can take with them for the rest of their lives.

What we do

Our Services

Writing

Our volunteers work with your child, line by line, to produce the highest quality of fiction or nonfiction work possible. Our volunteers help our students brainstorm, storyboard, write, and review each piece of literary work. Together, our team will make your child an author before they graduate from high school.

Mentoring

Our program is not just about words on paper, it is also about creating meaningful connections between volunteers and students. We heavily emphasize our volunteers to be mentors to our students. Teaching them not just about writing, but about life, school, family, relationships, and careers, while imparting a piece their own lives to help guide their students’ lives.

Leadership

Our students don’t just become published authors, they become leaders. Our first student, Riyani Patel, is now a youth ambassador for the Tourette’s Association of America. We have had other students become leaders inside and outside of their classrooms as well. Writing a book doesn’t just put money in your child’s pocket or help them put a unique extracurricular activity on their college applications, it transforms their lives to use their gift of writing to benefit their peers and the entire world.

Public Speaking

Starting from their first book release party, our students hone and perfect public pitches of their books. We help our students overcome any fear of public speaking. From book parties to commercials, to interviews, your child will learn to feel comfortable sharing their story and speaking in front of audiences.

What Drives Us

Mission

The mission of Literary Legacies is to amplify the voices of marginalized youth from traditionally divested from communities through the power of written, expressed, and spoken words.

Success Stories

As a parent, you always want to see your child enjoy learning new things and to be passionate about things. I was so excited when Nathan was invited to write a book with your program, as he has a passion for reading and writing and it has been wonderful to see him through this process get more and more excited about completing his book. We have a tradition in our house that for each chapter he completes with you, we have him read it to us at home. I can't express into words the gratitude I have for you and this amazing program, but I want you to know that I am so thankful for this wonderful opportunity that you have given to my son.

After career day at school my daughter Rachel came home with a flyer from Literary Legacies. I was immediately excited. Rachel had already started 9 different stories and I wanted her to focus on one until it was finished. We meet with David Chappell and discussed the process of working with a volunteer to write a book. The volunteer would work with Rachel from start to finish. Since Rachel had already started her book our volunteer Heather helped Rachel with an outline, character development, and making sure her story makes sense. Heather guides Rachel in her story development, corrects grammar and spelling. We both love Heather. I am so grateful for Rachel’s opportunity. I think this is an experience of a lifetime. She hopes to become a writer and Literary Legacies has given her a chance to start, practice and grow. I am super excited for her to finish her book and have a book launch.

When my son, Derek, who is 10, came home with a flyer for Literary Legacies, I had never heard of it and didn’t know what to expect. Derek was very interested in signing up. The initial meeting with David Chappell was informative and piqued both our interests. Derek would be working on a story that he would create from start to finish with the help of David. This story has the possibility of turning into a published book which is such a great opportunity. To see Derek’s enthusiasm each week while meeting with David is really wonderful. He is halfway through his classes and is working on the second of 3 short stories. I feel Literary Legacies taps into a creativity level the kids didn’t even know they had. Derek loves to read and this allows him to create a few stories that hopefully other kids will enjoy to read as well.
